After 7 Years, P’Nut the Squirrel Is Taken Away and Then Put Down
Belinda Scott was shocked when she was told that her pet squirrel had been taken by the RSPCA and put down due to being ‘feral’
A pet owner was left in tears after her beloved pet squirrel was taken away and put down by the RSPCA. Belinda Scott, 51, had kept the squirrel called P’Nut as a pet for seven years after finding him as a baby in her garden. “He was an absolute joy and part of the family,” she said. “He would run around the house, play with my dog, and even watch television with us.”
But Belinda’s happiness was short-lived when she received a call from the RSPCA last week. They told her that they had received a complaint about P’Nut and that they were coming to take him away. “I was devastated,” said Belinda. “I begged them not to take him, but they said they had to because he was ‘feral’ .”
The RSPCA took P’Nut away and put him down the same day. Belinda was not allowed to see him or say goodbye. “I’m heartbroken,” she said. “I can’t believe they just killed him like that. He was my baby.”
The RSPCA said in a statement that they had received a complaint about P’Nut and that they had investigated the matter. They said that they had found that P’Nut was “feral” and that he posed a risk to public health. “We understand that this is a difficult time for Ms. Scott, but we believe that we made the right decision in this case,” the RSPCA said.
Belinda is now campaigning for a change in the law to protect pet squirrels.
She said: “I don’t want any other family to go through what I have gone through. Pet squirrels are just as loving and loyal as any other pet, and they deserve to be protected.”
A petition calling for a change in the law has now been signed by more than 100,000 people.
