Budget limits options for youth, says pub landlord
Young people are being priced out of pubs due to rising costs, a landlord has warned.
Landlord Ian Ward, who runs the Old Mill in Warwick, said the cost of living crisis is having a big impact on young people's ability to enjoy a night out.
He said: "Young people are really struggling at the moment. They're on low wages and the cost of everything is going up.
A pint of beer now costs around £4.50, and a packet of crisps is £1.50. For a young person on minimum wage, that's a lot of money to spend on a night out.
He continued: "I think it's really important that pubs are affordable for young people. They're the future of our industry, and we need to make sure that they can still enjoy a night out.
Rising costs
The cost of living crisis is not the only factor that is making it difficult for young people to afford a night out. The smoking ban has also had a significant impact.
Before the smoking ban, pubs were able to generate a lot of revenue from cigarette sales. However, since the ban was introduced, pubs have lost a significant source of income.
As a result, many pubs have had to increase their prices in order to stay afloat. This has made it even more difficult for young people to afford a night out.
What can be done?
There are a number of things that can be done to make pubs more affordable for young people.
- Pubs could offer discounts to young people.
- Pubs could host special events for young people, such as student nights.
- The government could reduce the tax on beer.
It is important to make sure that pubs are affordable for young people. They are the future of our industry, and we need to make sure that they can still enjoy a night out.
