Cody Gakpo double downs Brighton to send Liverpool into Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Liverpool booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a comfortable 3-0 win at Brighton on Wednesday, with Cody Gakpo scoring twice on his full debut.
The Dutchman, who joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January, opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a close-range finish after Darwin Nunez's shot was saved.
Liverpool doubled their lead in the 19th minute when Mohamed Salah played a one-two with Harvey Elliott and then fired home from the edge of the area.
Gakpo added his second goal in the 58th minute, heading home from Andy Robertson's cross.
The win was Liverpool's first in the Carabao Cup since 2016, and they will now face Manchester City in the quarter-finals.
Brighton, who have now lost their last three matches, remain in the Premier League's relegation zone.
