Edinburgh Cowgate lockdown as hundreds told 'get out of pubs now'
Police Scotland has ordered the immediate closure of pubs in Edinburgh's Cowgate after reports of overcrowding
Hundreds of people have been told to leave pubs in Edinburgh's Cowgate area as police enforce a lockdown in response to overcrowding.
Police Scotland said officers were called to the area on Saturday night following reports of large crowds gathering outside licensed premises.
The force said in a statement: "Officers are currently in attendance in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh following reports of overcrowding at licensed premises.
"As a result, a number of premises have been ordered to close and members of the public are being asked to leave the area.
"We would advise people to avoid the area at this time and to follow the instructions of officers."
Police said there had been no reports of any arrests or injuries.
The Cowgate is a popular nightlife spot in Edinburgh, with a number of pubs, bars and restaurants.
The lockdown comes as Scotland continues to battle the Covid-19 pandemic. The country is currently under Level 4 restrictions, which means that all non-essential businesses are closed and people are being advised to stay at home.
The Scottish government has said that the lockdown measures are necessary to slow the spread of the virus and protect the NHS.
The lockdown in the Cowgate is expected to remain in place until further notice.
