Ipswich Town legend and passionate ‘superfan’ to be recognised in remembrance fixture
Club stalwart and fans' favourite Russell Cowling passed away at the age of 92 in December and played more than 500 games for the Tractor Boys
Ipswich Town will hold a special game in memory of club legend Russell Cowling, who passed away at the age of 92 last month.
The fixture will be held this weekend and further details will be announced in due course.
A fans' favourite, Cowling played more than 500 games for the Tractor Boys, scoring over 100 goals. He played a key role in the club's promotion to the top flight in 1961 and is a member of the club's Hall of Fame.
Cowling had a reputation as a tough tackling full-back, who was not afraid to put his body on the line.
His performances on the pitch made him a fans' favourite and he was affectionately known to many as 'Superfan'.
Club ambassador Mick Mills paid tribute to Cowling, describing him as a "true gentleman" and a "legend"
"He played the game with passion and pride and was always a great ambassador for Ipswich Town," said Mills.
"He will be sadly missed by everyone at the club and by all who knew him."
Cowling's death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the Ipswich Town community
Many fans have taken to social media to share their memories of the former player.
One fan wrote: "Russell Cowling was a true Ipswich Town legend. He will be sadly missed."
Another fan said: "He was a great player and a lovely man. He will be remembered for his passion, commitment and skill."
