Ipswich Town Legend Kevin Beattie Dies Aged 77
Touching tributes have been paid to former Ipswich Town and England star Kevin Beattie, who has died aged 77.
The ex-serviceman became a firm fans' favourite during his time at Portman Road, helping the Tractor Boys win the UEFA Cup and FA Cup in 1981.
Beattie also earned 9 caps for England, making his debut in a 1-0 win against Wales in 1975. He was part of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain.
Beattie began his career with Carlisle United, where he spent three seasons before joining Ipswich in 1971. He quickly established himself as a key player for the Suffolk club, forming a formidable partnership with fellow defender Mick Mills.
He made over 300 appearances for Ipswich, scoring 33 goals. He was also part of the team that won the FA Cup in 1978, beating Arsenal 1-0 in the final.
Beattie left Ipswich in 1982 to join Leicester City. He spent two seasons with the Foxes, before retiring from playing in 1984.
After retiring from playing, Beattie worked as a coach and manager. He had spells in charge of Colchester United, Millwall and Southampton, among others.
Beattie's death has been met with sadness by the football world. Ipswich Town have paid tribute to their former player, describing him as a "legend" and a "true gentleman".
