‘It Is A Privlege’ – Caelan Doris on Captaining Ireland
Ireland international Caelan Doris has spoken of his pride at being named captain of the team for the upcoming Six Nations Championship.
The 24-year-old flanker will lead his country for the first time in the tournament opener against Wales in Cardiff on February 4.
Doris, who has won 18 caps for Ireland, said it was a “huge honour” to be given the captaincy and that he is relishing the opportunity to lead the team.
"It is a huge honour to be named captain of Ireland," Doris said. "It is something I never thought I would achieve, so I am very proud. I am really looking forward to leading the team out in Cardiff and I am confident that we can have a successful tournament."
Doris has been in impressive form for Ireland in recent months and was one of the standout performers in the team's victory over New Zealand in November.
He is a physical and aggressive player who is also a good ball carrier and tackler. He is also a good leader and is respected by his teammates.
Ireland head coach Andy Farrell said Doris was the right man to lead the team in the Six Nations Championship.
"Caelan is a natural leader and he has the respect of the players and the staff," Farrell said. "He is a tough, physical player who is also a good ball carrier and tackler. He is also a good communicator and he is able to get his point across in a clear and concise way.
“I am confident that he will be a successful captain and that he will lead Ireland to success in the Six Nations Championship.
