Kettering Town reach FA Cup second round after Northampton win
Kettering reach the FA Cup second round after a 3-0 away win at National League rivals Northampton
Jack Sowerby (2) and Callum Chettle scored as the Poppies earned a trip to Exeter City
Kettering Town's reward for beating Guiseley in the first round of the FA Cup was a trip to fellow National League rivals Northampton Town.
In a game played in driving rain, Kettering took the lead with the first real chance of the game on 12 minutes. Joe Grayson's corner was not cleared properly by the Northampton defence and Jack Sowerby was on hand to tap home from close range.
Northampton pushed for an equaliser, but Kettering keeper Paul White was in inspired form. He produced a fine stop to deny Louis Appere on 25 minutes, and then got down well to save a goalbound Mitch Pinnock effort just before half-time.
Kettering should have doubled their lead early in the second half, but Jake Newman somehow headed wide from six yards out. They did make it 2-0 on 67 minutes though, when Callum Chettle was played through on goal and he slotted home calmly.
Northampton pushed for a goal to get themselves back into the game, but Kettering defended resolutely and wrapped up the win in the 89th minute when Sowerby slotted home his second goal of the game.
The draw for the second round of the FA Cup will be made on Monday night.
