Late Armstrong winner downs Everton to earn Southampton first league win
Saints end poor run of form with dramatic victory
Substitute Adam Armstrong scored a late winner as Southampton came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at St Mary's and earn their first Premier League win of the season.
The hosts took an early lead through Joe Aribo but were pegged back by Conor Coady's header just before half-time.
Armstrong, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, popped up with the winner in the 84th minute to seal a much-needed three points for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.
The result lifts Southampton off the bottom of the table and up to 15th place, while Everton remain in the relegation zone in 19th.
Armstrong the hero for Saints
Armstrong's goal was his first in the Premier League since joining Southampton from Blackburn Rovers in the summer.
The 25-year-old has had to be patient for his chance to shine, but he made the most of it when he came on in the second half.
Armstrong's pace and movement caused Everton problems all afternoon, and he eventually got his reward with a well-taken goal.
Saints end poor run of form
Southampton's win was their first in the Premier League since April.
The Saints had endured a difficult start to the season, losing their first four games without scoring a goal.
But they showed great character to come from behind and beat an Everton side who had won their previous two games.
Everton's misery continues
Everton's defeat was their third in a row in the Premier League.
The Toffees have now lost six of their last seven games in all competitions.
Frank Lampard's side are now in the relegation zone and face a tough task to avoid the drop.
