New Irish Super-Bantamweight champion Ruadhan Farrell: ‘I learned from setbacks’

Cork’s Farrell wins national title for first time

Ruadhan Farrell has revealed that he learned from various setbacks along the way which ultimately helped him claim the Irish Super-Bantamweight title.

Farrell’s journey to the top

The 23-year-old produced a stunning unanimous decision victory over fellow countryman Paul Hyland Jr in Dublin on Saturday to be crowned national champion for the first time in his career. Farrell has now won nine fights since making his professional debut in November 2020 and is considered one of Ireland’s brightest boxing prospects. Farrell's triumph is the culmination of years of dedication and hard work, but the Cork native has faced his fair share of setbacks along the way. After making a successful start to his professional career, Farrell suffered a shock defeat against Poland's Patryk Szymanski in April 2021. However, Farrell bounced back with three consecutive wins and was handed the chance to challenge for the Irish title against Hyland Jr. The Cork fighter says that he has learned from his previous setbacks and believes that they have made him a better boxer.

“I’ve had a few setbacks in my career, but I’ve learned from them,” Farrell said following his victory. “I learned that I can’t take anything for granted in this sport. I had to work hard and I had to stay dedicated. “I’m just glad that I was able to come out on top tonight and win the Irish title. It’s a dream come true.” Farrell praised the performance of Hyland Jr, who he says pushed him all the way in a difficult fight.

“Paul is a great fighter,” Farrell said. “He’s a tough opponent and he gave me a hard fight tonight. “I had to dig deep in the later rounds, but I managed to get the win. I’m just happy that I got the job done.” Farrell says that he is now looking forward to the next chapter in his career and is eager to test himself against the best fighters in the world.

“I want to keep improving and keep learning,” Farrell said. “I want to fight the best fighters in the world and see how I measure up. “I believe that I can be a world champion and I’m going to do everything I can to make that happen.”
