Australian golfer Jarrod Lyle has revealed he has lost vision in his left eye after being struck by a golf ball.

Lyle, 36, was hit in the eye during a practice round at the Victorian PGA Championship at Moonah Links on Wednesday.

The former world number 55 was taken to hospital and underwent surgery, but doctors were unable to save his sight in his left eye.

Lyle, who has been battling cancer since 2012, said he was "devastated" by the news.

"I'm still trying to process what has happened," Lyle said in a statement.

"I'm so grateful to the medical staff who have done everything they can, but unfortunately, they couldn't save my sight in my left eye.

"I'm still coming to terms with this, but I'm determined to keep fighting and playing golf.

"I know it will be a challenge, but I'm not giving up on my dream of playing on the PGA Tour again.

"I want to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time.

"I'm so grateful for the love and support of my family, friends, and fans."
