Toffees Slump to Another Defeat, Saints Held by Brentford
Everton and Southampton both suffered setbacks in their fight against Premier League relegation on Saturday, as the Toffees slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa and the Saints were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford.
Everton's Woes Continue
Everton's defeat at Villa Park was their fourth successive loss in the league, leaving them just one point above the relegation zone.
Ollie Watkins opened the scoring for Villa in the 13th minute, and Emiliano BuendÃa added a second goal just before half-time.
Everton barely threatened in the second half, and their defeat leaves them in serious danger of dropping out of the Premier League for the first time since 1954.
Southampton Held by Brentford
Southampton are also in a precarious position after being held to a draw by Brentford at St Mary's Stadium.
Yoane Wissa gave Brentford the lead in the 19th minute, but Che Adams equalized for Southampton just before the hour mark.
Both teams had chances to win the game in the closing stages, but ultimately had to settle for a point apiece.
Outlook for Everton and Southampton
Everton and Southampton now have just eight games remaining in the season, and both teams need to start picking up points if they want to avoid relegation.
Everton's next game is at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Southampton travel to Leeds United on Tuesday.
