Strictly Come Dancing SLAMMED by animal charity over ‘violently obtained’ and ‘cruel’ part of show
Horse lovers have blasted the BBC series for its use of ‘cruel’ horse bits - after a shocking clip showed a trainer using a ‘painful’ instrument on a show horse
Animal rights charity PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has slammed Strictly Come Dancing over its use of ‘violent’ and ‘cruel’ horse bits - after a shocking clip showed a trainer using a ‘painful’ instrument on a show horse.
The incident in question involved professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, who was filmed using a ‘gag bit’ on a horse during a training session for the show.
Gag bits are used to control horses by applying pressure to their tongue and jaw, and are considered to be one of the most severe types of bit that can be used.
PETA has since condemned the use of gag bits on Strictly Come Dancing, calling the practice ‘violent’ and ‘cruel’. PETA director Elisa Allen said:
“Horses are sensitive animals who should not be subjected to such cruel and painful training methods. Gag bits are barbaric devices that can cause horses immense pain and distress.”
Allen added that there are many ‘positive reinforcement’ training methods that can be used to train horses without the need for violence or pain.
The BBC has defended its use of gag bits on Strictly Come Dancing, saying that they are ‘used in a safe and responsible way’ and that the show’s horses ‘are well-cared for and their welfare is of paramount importance’.
However, PETA has urged the BBC to reconsider its use of gag bits, and to adopt more humane training methods.
