Swans boss provides update on Ben Johnson chase
Russell Martin admits Swansea City were made aware of Ben Johnson’s availability in the summer, but the club opted against a move.
The South Wales Evening Post understands the Swans were offered the chance to sign Johnson on loan, but decided against pursuing the deal due to the strength of their options at wing-back.
“There was a lot of interest in Ben in the summer, but we felt we were strong in that position,” said Martin.
“We had Harry (Darling) coming back from injury, Joel (Latibeaudiere) had done really well in pre-season and we had Ryan (Manning) as well.”
“We felt we had enough cover there and we didn’t want to block anyone’s pathway.”
Johnson is a product of the West Ham academy and has made over 50 appearances for the first team.
He can play at right-back or left-back, and has also been used as a wing-back.
The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to several clubs in recent months, including Newcastle United and Everton.
He is expected to leave West Ham in the summer when his contract expires.
