UK politics live: ‘I was wrong’ to promise no tax rises, Reeves admits as Badenoch prepares shadow cabinet

Nadhim Zahawi, Grant Shapps and Sajid Javid are among the big names not expected to be offered a role in Rishi Sunak’s new top team

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has admitted that Labour was wrong to promise not to raise taxes – and said the party should have been clearer about its future plans.

Reeves told the BBC’s Sunday Morning programme: “I think we were wrong to make that commitment not to raise taxes. I think we should have been clearer with the public about what our plans would be. And I think that’s something that we need to learn from.”

Her comments came as Rishi Sunak prepared to announce his new shadow cabinet on Monday.

Sunak, who was elected leader of the Conservative party on Friday, is expected to make significant changes to the team that served under his predecessor Boris Johnson.

Nadhim Zahawi, Grant Shapps and Sajid Javid are among the big names not expected to be offered a role.

Meanwhile, Kemi Badenoch, who ran against Sunak in the leadership contest, is being tipped for a senior position.

Badenoch, who is currently equalities minister, is said to be in the running to become foreign secretary or home secretary.
