Watkins sends Villa into quarters as Tottenham host ghost of Pleat
Ollie Watkins fired Aston Villa through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals as Tottenham were left to rue Erik Lamela's penalty miss.
On an emotional night in North London, Spurs were bidding to honour the memory of former player and coach David Pleat, who died aged 73 last weekend.
And the pre-match tributes were nearly followed by a dramatic victory when Lamela was felled by Ezri Konsa and won a 14th-minute penalty.
However, the Argentinian forward, captaining the side in the absence of Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane, blazed his spot-kick over the bar.
Lamela's miss proved a costly one as Watkins struck early in the second half. The striker was played in behind by Anwar El Ghazi and showed great composure to finish past Pierluigi Gollini.
Villa were good value for their win and Brentford joined them in the last eight with a 2-0 win over Premier League rivals Stoke.
Bryan Mbeumo's fine solo goal and Yoane Wissa's late strike booked Brentford's place in the quarter-finals, while Manchester City and Manchester United both made it through with 2-0 victories over Burnley and Brighton respectively.
