Weston-super-Mare AFC knocked out of FA Cup by Bristol Rovers F.C.
Weston-super-Mare AFC's FA Cup run came to an end on Saturday as they were beaten 2-0 by Bristol Rovers F.C. at the Memorial Stadium.
The National League South side had held their own in the first half, but Rovers took the lead just before the break through Jayden Mitchell-Lawson.
The League One side then made sure of the win in the second half when Aaron Collins added a second goal.
Weston-super-Mare AFC started the game well and had a couple of early chances.
Jake Hyde had a shot saved by Joe Day, while Josh Grant fired wide from a good position.
However, Rovers gradually began to take control of the game and Mitchell-Lawson gave them the lead in the 43rd minute.
The forward was played through on goal by Collins and he finished well past Luke Purnell.
The visitors created chances in the second half, but struggled against the experienced Rovers team.
Jack Munns had a good chance to equalize, but his shot was saved by Day.
And Collins made sure of the win in the 70th minute when he headed home from close range after a cross from Sam Nicholson.
Weston-super-Mare AFC manager Matt Taylor was disappointed with the result, but praised his team's effort.
"We gave it a good go, but Rovers were just too strong for us in the end," he said.
"I'm proud of my players for the effort they put in, but we need to learn from this and come back stronger next season."
Rovers manager Joey Barton was pleased with his team's performance.
"I thought we were excellent today," he said.
"We controlled the game from start to finish and created a lot of chances.
"We're now in the hat for the next round and we're looking forward to seeing who we get."
The draw for the fourth round of the FA Cup will be held on Monday night.
