Ballon d'Or 2021: Messi Wins Seventh Award
A Look at the Top 10
After a year's absence, the Ballon d'Or returned to crown Lionel Messi as the world's best player for a record-breaking seventh time. The Paris Saint-Germain forward edged out Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea's Jorginho to claim the prestigious award. Messi's triumph was built on his success with Argentina, where he led his nation to their first major title in 28 years by winning the Copa America.
Lewandowski, who won the FIFA Men's Player of the Year award, finished second after another prolific season for Bayern Munich. The Polish striker scored 48 goals in all competitions for the German giants, including 41 in the Bundesliga. Jorginho, meanwhile, enjoyed a stellar season with Chelsea, helping the Blues win the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. The Italian midfielder was also named UEFA Men's Player of the Year for his performances with both club and country.
Rounding out the top five were Real Madrid duo Karim Benzema and Luka Modric. Benzema enjoyed a stellar season for the Spanish giants, scoring 30 goals in all competitions. Modric, meanwhile, played a key role in Real Madrid's La Liga title triumph and their run to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
