Ex-Liverpool chief makes worrying Mo Salah transfer claim: 'Saudi is entirely possible'
Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards believes Mo Salah could leave the club for a Saudi Arabian side, with money on offer that the Reds cannot compete with.
Edwards, who left Liverpool in the summer of 2022, has a close relationship with Salah, having signed him for Roma in 2017.
The Egyptian's future at Anfield has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, with his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2025.
Salah is reported to be seeking a salary in the region of £400,000-a-week, which would make him the highest-paid player in Liverpool's history. However, the club is reluctant to meet his demands, with manager Jurgen Klopp insisting that the club's wage structure must be respected.
Saudi Arabian clubs are reportedly willing to offer Salah a salary that would dwarf anything he could earn at Liverpool. Al Hilal and Al Nassr are both said to be interested in signing the 30-year-old.
Edwards believes that Salah could be tempted by a move to Saudi Arabia, especially if Liverpool are unable to match the financial package on offer.
"Mo is a world-class player and he will always have options," Edwards told The Times. "If Liverpool cannot offer him the wages he wants, then he will have to consider other options.
"Saudi Arabia is an emerging market for football and they are willing to spend big money. They have already signed some big names, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos.
"I think it is entirely possible that Mo could move to Saudi Arabia in the future."
Salah has been a key player for Liverpool since joining the club from Roma in 2017. He has scored 175 goals in 284 appearances for the Reds, helping them to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
However, Salah's form has dipped slightly this season, with the Egyptian scoring just four goals in 14 Premier League appearances.
