'It's frustrating': Lawson loses point to Perez in Sao Paulo sprint

Liam Lawson says it was "frustrating" to lose a point to Sergio Perez in the Sao Paulo sprint race after the Mexican driver was handed a place back on track due to a Safety Car error.

Perez was forced to give up the position to Lawson on lap 12 of the 24-lap sprint after running off the track and rejoining ahead of the New Zealander.

However, Perez was then handed the place back after the Safety Car was deployed following Alex Albon's retirement, as the stewards deemed that he would have been ahead of Lawson had the Safety Car not been called.

Lawson was left to finish 12th, one place behind Perez, and the Carlin driver admitted he was disappointed with the outcome.

"It's frustrating because I think we had the pace to finish in the top 10," said Lawson. "We were running 10th before the Safety Car and I think we could have kept that position."

Lawson admitted that the Safety Car played a big role in the outcome of the race, but he also felt that he could have done more to keep Perez behind.

"I think I could have done a better job of defending against Perez," said Lawson. "I didn't get the best start and I was a bit slow off the line, which allowed him to get alongside me."

Lawson will start 12th in Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix, while Perez will start 11th.
