McLaren Says Bortoleto's Future Remains Up in Air as Sauber Talks Advance
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has cast doubt over the future of Formula 2 racer Ugo Bortoleto at the team, amid reports linking him with a move to Sauber.
Bortoleto, 22, has been part of the McLaren Young Driver Programme since 2020 and is currently competing in Formula 2 with Campos Racing.
He has impressed in Formula 2 this season, taking two podium finishes and sitting seventh in the standings with two rounds remaining.
However, Brown has suggested that Bortoleto may not have a future at McLaren, with the team focusing on its current Formula 1 drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
"Ugo is a talented driver, but we have to make decisions based on what is best for the team," Brown told Autosport.
"We have two very strong drivers in Lando and Oscar, and we need to focus on helping them achieve their potential."
Bortoleto has been linked with a move to Sauber, which is set to become Audi's works team in Formula 1 from 2026.
Sauber is reportedly looking to sign a young driver to partner Valtteri Bottas next season, and Bortoleto is believed to be one of the candidates.
Brown admitted that he is aware of the reports linking Bortoleto with Sauber, but he refused to be drawn on whether the Brazilian could leave McLaren.
"I don't want to speculate on what might happen in the future," Brown said.
"Ugo is still a McLaren driver, and we will continue to support him in his Formula 2 campaign."
