Stoke captain Ben Gibson heads in late winner to see off Derby
Stoke City came from behind to beat Derby County 2-1 at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday, with captain Ben Gibson heading in a late winner.
The Rams took the lead through Tom Lawrence in the first half, but Jacob Brown equalised for the Potters just after the hour mark.
With the game looking set to end in a draw, Gibson popped up with a dramatic winner in the 89th minute to secure all three points for Stoke.
The result sees Stoke move up to 16th in the Championship table, while Derby remain bottom with just one win from their opening 11 games.
Derby started the game brightly and took the lead in the 26th minute when Lawrence latched onto a loose ball and fired home from just inside the area.
Stoke came close to equalising just before half-time when Brown saw his shot saved by Derby goalkeeper Ryan Allsop.
The Potters continued to press after the break and got their reward in the 63rd minute when Brown tapped home from close range after good work from Tyrese Campbell.
Stoke pushed for a winner in the closing stages and were rewarded when Gibson headed home from a corner in the 89th minute.
"I'm delighted with the character and resilience the players showed today," said Stoke manager Michael O'Neill.
"We went behind but we never gave up and we kept fighting until the end.
"It was a great goal from Ben and it's a massive three points for us."
Derby manager Wayne Rooney was disappointed with the result but praised his players for their effort.
"We're very disappointed to lose the game," he said.
"But I can't fault the players for their effort and commitment.
"We're going through a tough time at the moment but we need to stick together and keep fighting."
