Russell Martin admits Swansea City tried to sign Oxford United’s Marcus Browne during the summer transfer window

Swansea City head coach Russell Martin has revealed that the club attempted to sign Oxford United winger Marcus Browne during the summer transfer window. The Swans were linked with a move for Browne throughout the summer, but a deal failed to materialise.

Speaking after Swansea's 2-1 win over Reading on Wednesday night, Martin confirmed that the club had made an approach for Browne, but the player ultimately decided to remain at Oxford.

Martin said:

"We tried to sign Marcus Browne in the summer. He's a player that we admire. He's a talented player, a good player, and we felt he would have been a good fit for us.

"But he decided to stay at Oxford, which is his prerogative. We respect his decision and we wish him all the best.

"We're always looking to improve the squad, and we'll continue to do so in January and beyond."

Browne has been a key player for Oxford this season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 12 appearances.

The 24-year-old has been with Oxford since 2020, having previously played for Middlesbrough, Wigan Athletic and West Ham United.

It remains to be seen whether Swansea will make another attempt to sign Browne in the future, but Martin's comments suggest that the player is still on their radar.
