West Indies vs England: Marcus Trescothick backs side's youth policy
Former England opener Marcus Trescothick has backed the West Indies' decision to select a young and inexperienced squad for the upcoming Test series against England.
The Windies have named a 15-man squad for the three-match series, which includes just three players with more than 10 Test caps.
The surprise inclusion of uncapped batsman Keacy Carty and fast bowler Jayden Seales has raised eyebrows, but Trescothick believes it is a positive move from the West Indies selectors.
"I think it's a good thing," Trescothick told ESPNcricinfo. "They've got some exciting young players coming through, and they need to give them a chance to show what they can do.
"They're not going to win every game, but they're going to learn a lot and they're going to get better with experience."
Trescothick, who played 76 Tests for England, knows a thing or two about developing young players.
He was part of the England team that won the Ashes in 2005, and he played a key role in the development of players such as Andrew Flintoff, Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell.
Trescothick believes that the West Indies have the potential to be a force in Test cricket once again, but he warns that it will take time.
"They've got some good young players, but they need to be patient," Trescothick said.
"It's going to take time for them to develop, but I think they've got the potential to be a very good team in the future.
"They've got some exciting young batsmen, and their bowlers are starting to show some promise. If they can keep them together for a few years, I think they can be a real force in Test cricket."
